St Benedict is a patron saint of Europe and revered in major traditional branches of the Christian church. Benedict founded twelve communities for monks, operating as a confederation of autonomous congregations in Italy. He is most famous for writing The Order of Saint Benedict, which became widely adopted by the monastic movement due to its reasonableness and balance. Because of his rule he is now widely regarded as the founder of Western Christian Monasticism.
